Zenqaoui

In Algeria, football supporters’ chants are music in their own right. And since 2019, by mixing them with raï and rap, artists and producers have given birth to zenqaoui, a hugely popular musical genre. Thanks to it, its singers make their sometimes politically engaged lyrics resonate beyond the stadiums, the birthplaces of modern protest in Algeria.
